Genetics and Identity

Genetics and Identity: "Genetics and the Meaning of Race [top]
When the sequencing of the human genome was completed in 2000, it was heralded as evidence that race was a cultural construction with little base in science. The sequencing apparently shows that approximately 99.9% of the human genome is the same in everybody, and that there is greater genetic variation within each race than there is between races.
According to Dr Craig Venter of Celera Genomics, one of the organizations involved in the sequencing, the level of genetic similarity shows that: 'Race is a social concept, not a scientific one.' There is only one race, Dr Venter and other scientists at the National Institutes of Health have unanimously declared: the human race.

Dr Harold Freemen of the North General Hospital in Manhattan told the New York Times that only about 0.01% of our genes are responsible for our external appearance, on which we base our racial categorizations. The humans brain is finely attuned to recognize differences in appearance to facilitate differentiating between individuals. We therefore place great emphasis on appearance. But these differences in appearance translate into only tiny differences in our genetic make-up.

Many scientists and academics believe that this new information challenges the legitimacy of racial categorizations and shows that race is a meaningless notion. In 1997 the American Anthropological Association, which has published an official statement on race, urged the government to cease using racial categories."

Update on Brent Kennedy February 23, 2006

I know it has been a very long time since I have sent out an email. I have been out of town and not able to have access to my distribution lists. Sorry to keep you hanging. Today Robyn told me that they have scheduled to take Brent to the Shepherd's Center in Atlanta on Monday, February 27th. This is good news as the Shepherd Center is THE center for brain stem injury rehab. At this time there is no definite length of time that Brent is scheduled to be in Atlanta, it will depend on his progress. Also, rest assured that Robyn will be surrounded by family and close friends. Robyn's brother lives in Atlanta with his wife and two sons and Robyn has several lifelong close friends that live in Atlanta. Ryan should be able to get good flights from Boston to Atlanta to make his visits easier. All in all, this is a very good next step. Since I last wrote, Brent has continued to make very small continual improvements. He now tracks objects with his eyes and has developed quite an'expressive' eyebrow movement. Brent is obviously working very hard and so we CANNOT give up on him. We know our prayers and petitions are working, so please keep Brent in your prayers and keep the positive thoughts.

Best to each of you.

the oldest known European settlement in the interior of the United States, north of Morgantown, NC.

Smithsonian Magazine has an interesting article on this archaeological site in the March issue titled 'Spain Makes a Stand'. The dig is on land owned by a Berry family. There is evidence of a Spanish Fort that abuts an Indian mound. States they have found numerous European artifacts.

I can't find a link to this article to send but hope all can have access to the magazine. "

Joara and Fort San Juan: culture contact at the edge of the world David G. Moore, Robin A. Beck, Jr. & Christopher B. Rodning The Berry site is located on Upper Creek, a tributary of the Catawba River, about twelve km north of Morganton in Burke County, North Carolina (Figure 1). The site covers about 5 ha and is situated on the extreme north-east margin of a 75 ha alluvial bottomland. Archaeological research indicates that it was one of the largest native towns in North Carolina during the mid-sixteenth century (Beck & Moore 2002; Moore 2002). The site was identified in Cyrus Thomas' 1891 report on mound explorations for the Smithsonian Institution, where it is described as a 'Mound on the west Bank of Upper Creek 8 miles north of Morganton (about 15 feet high and unexplored)' (1891:151). Our research indicates that the Berry site is the native town of Joara, visited by the Spanish expeditions of Hernando de Soto in 1540 and Juan Pardo from 1567-1568. Pardo's Fort San Juan, constructed at Joara, is the earliest European settlement in the interior of what is now the United States"

Fall of Fort San Juan

Fall of Fort San Juan: "The Fall of Fort San Juan

By Rob Beck and Caroline Ketron

On December 1, 1566, Captain Juan Pardo departed from Santa Elena, the capital of Spanish La Florida, with a company of 125 men. Pardo's command was to explore the deep interior, to claim this territory for Spain while pacifying local Indians, and to forge a route from Santa Elena to the Spanish silver mines in northern Mexico. In January 1567, Pardo arrived at Joara, a large native town situated near the base of the mountains. Documentary and archaeological data indicate that Joara was in the upper Catawba basin of what is now western North Carolina. Pardo renamed this town Cuenca, after his native city in Spain; here he built a fort, San Juan, and left thirty men to defend the fort and to occupy the town. Earlier European expeditions into the interior had erected short-term, seasonal encampments, for example the winter camps that Soto built near modern Tallahassee, Florida, and in northeast Mississippi, and that Jaques Cartier built near modern Montreal, Quebec. Pardo, however, founded Cuenca and Fort San Juan in order to permanently expand the colony of Santa Elena into the northern frontiers of La Florida. In so doing, he founded the earliest European settlement in the interior of North America, north of the Rio Grande. Fort San Juan was occupied by Pardo's soldiers for nearly a year and a half, until shortly after May 1568, when news arrived at Santa Elena that this as well as Pardo's five other forts had fallen to Indian attack. With the fall of these forts ended Spain's only attempt to colonize the deep interior of northern La Florida.

Our research indicates that the Berry site--located along the upper Catawba River in Burke County, North Carolina--is the native town of Joara, location of Pardo's Cuenca and Fort San Juan. Sin"

The head bone's connected to ... Bush?

The head bone's connected to ... Bush?: "The head bone's connected to ... Bush?

Saturday, September 23, 2000

One expects, from a family of politicians, a certain amount of skullduggery. But that is a term of art. It should not involve the actual digging of skulls.

So begins one of the odder political stories of recent years. It involves allegations that George W. Bush's grandfather, Prescott Bush, late of the United States Senate by way of Connecticut, had joined a midnight foray 82 years ago into an Oklahoma graveyard whence he emerged with the mortal skull of Geronimo, the Apache warlord who spent his final years as a tourist attraction and, it would seem, part of his afterlife as a souvenir.
The story unfolded when Apache tribesmen from Arizona debated whether to have Geronimo exhumed and brought back to his native soil. They received, unsolicited, a letter advising them that Geronimo's head had taken up residence in New Haven, Conn., home to Yale University and its secret Skull and Bones Society.

'He sent a photo,' said Raleigh Thompson, a tribal council member. It showed a skull, remnants of a bridle and a photo of Geronimo.

'The only people who dig up bones are the witchcraft people,' Thompson shuddered.
His group later obtained what purported to be an internal history of Skull and Bones that included this account: In 1918, Prescott Bush and two companions crept into the cemetery near Fort Sill and pried open the grave of Geronimo.
The head was taken out, spiffed up and forwarded to New Haven, where it was given pride of place for goofy rituals that have been attended by generations of Bushes and a veritable army of powerful types."

Apache SPIRIT: Carnegie showcases sculptures of influential American Indian artist: "When Geronimo, his great-uncle, surrendered to the Army in the border state of Chihuahua, Mexico, in 1886, Houser's father was among the captives sent by cattle-car to a prison in St. Augustine, Fla. His mother was born in an Alabama prison camp. Surviving Chiricahuas were later relocated to Fort Sill, Okla., remaining there for 23 years before the majority joined Mescalero Apaches on a New Mexico reservation. Houser's family was among the few who chose to remain in Oklahoma.

As a child, when not occupied with farm labor, Houser drew and carved, once getting into trouble for turning a special bar of his mother's soap into an artwork.

From 1934 to 1938, he studied painting at the Santa Fe Indian School with the legendary Dorothy Dunn, and by 1939 he was exhibiting at the New York World's Fair, the San Francisco Golden Gate International Exposition, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., and the Art Institute of Chicago, and had received a commission to paint murals for the Department of the Interior Building in Washington."

Cairo museum to combine thousands of Egyptian artifacts

Cairo museum to combine thousands of Egyptian artifacts: "Cairo museum to combine thousands of Egyptian artifacts

By Lee Keath, The Associated Press

CAIRO, Egypt -- A giant museum with a glowing alabaster facade, its roof in alignment with the nearby pyramids, will house King Tut's mummy and treasures along with thousands of other artifacts.

The design is finally set for the Grand Museum of Egypt, which is intended to gather -- in one spot at the foot of the pyramids -- some 100,000 artifacts, many of which have been sitting in warehouses for decades.

Egypt is negotiating with the Japanese Bank for International Development for a loan for the $500 million project and plans its own fund-raising drive. The $40 million that Egypt hopes to raise from a current tour of King Tutankhamun artifacts in the United States will go toward the project.

Officials hope to start building on the site this year and to complete construction by 2009, the Supreme Council for Antiquities said.

The museum will be set embedded in a desert plateau at the edge of the Nile Valley, a little more than a mile from the Great Pyramids, according to the model, designed by the Irish firm heneghan.peng.architects.

The dramatically angled roof is aligned with the monuments: A line drawn from one edge of the roof would touch the tip of the pyramid of Cheops -- the largest of the three -- and the other edge points toward peak of the smaller Khefre pyramid.

The 600-yard facade of the building will be covered with translucent alabaster. 'At night, this will be illuminated and glow,' said Yasser Mansour, the head of the Egyptian government's technical committee for the project.
A large triangular gate in the facade leads into the museum."

Secrets of the Tomb: Skull and Bones, The Ivy League, and the Hidden Paths of Power

Secrets of the Tomb: Skull and Bones, The Ivy League, and the Hidden Paths of Power: "Sometime in the early 1830s, a Yale student named William H. Russell - the future valedictorian of the class of 1833 - traveled to Germany to study for a year. Russell came from an inordinately wealthy family that ran one of the United States' most despicable business organizations of the nineteenth century: Russell and Company, an opium empire. Russell would later become a member of the Connecticut State Legislature, agGeneral in the Connecticut National Guard, and the founder of the Collegiate and Commercial Institute in New Haven. While in Germany, Russell befriended the leader of an insidious German secret society that hailed the death.s head as its logo. Russell soon became caught up in this group, itself a sinister outgrowth of the notorious eighteenth century society of the Illuminati. When Russell returned to the U.S., he found an atmosphere so anti-Masonic that even his beloved Phi Beta Kappa, the honor society, had been unceremoniously stripped of its secrecy. Incensed, Russell rounded up a group of the most promising students in his class - including Alphonso Taft, the future Secretary of War, Attorney General, Minister to Austria, Ambassador to Russia, and father of future President William Howard Taft - and out of vengeance constructed the most powerful secret society the United States has ever known.

The men called their organization the 'Brotherhood of Death,' or, more informally, 'The Order of Skull and Bones.' They adopted the numerological symbol 322 because their group was the second chapter of the German organization, founded in 1832. They worshipped the goddess Eulogia, celebrated pirates, and covertly plotted an underground conspiracy to dominate the world.

Fast forward 170 years. Skull and Bones has curled its tenta"

Biography of George Washington

Biography of George Washington: "George Washington
On April 30, 1789, George Washington, standing on the balcony of Federal Hall on Wall Street in New York, took his oath of office as the first President of the United States. 'As the first of every thing, in our situation will serve to establish a Precedent,' he wrote James Madison, 'it is devoutly wished on my part, that these precedents may be fixed on true principles.'

Born in 1732 into a Virginia planter family, he learned the morals, manners, and body of knowledge requisite for an 18th century Virginia gentleman.

He pursued two intertwined interests: military arts and western expansion. At 16 he helped survey Shenandoah lands for Thomas, Lord Fairfax. Commissioned a lieutenant colonel in 1754, he fought the first skirmishes of what grew into the French and Indian War. The next year, as an aide to Gen. Edward Braddock, he escaped injury although four bullets ripped his coat and two horses were shot from under him. "

The Yale Herald - October 24, 2003 - Of skulls and bones: More secrets of the tomb: "Alexandra Robbins, ES '98, has researched Bush's secret society extensively. Her recent book, Secrets of the Tomb, has heightened interest in the activities of Skull and Bones. She attests to the legitimacy of the story, 'The text looks to be an authentic Bones document describing Prescott Bush and other Bonesmen robbing Geronimo's grave and cleaning the skull with carbolic acid.' In interviews with Robbins, Bonesmen have admitted that there is a skull in the tomb that they call Geronimo."

Pulse of the Twin Cities - Locally Grown Alternative Newspaper: "Petition asks Congress to investigate Skull & Bones grave robbing evidence
Wednesday 11 January @ 19:53:53
Editors Note: Following is a petition now circulating regarding the shameless acts of the Skull & Bones society, whose members include President George Bush and Senator John Kerry.

To the U.S. Congress of the United States of America:

In 1918, the Presidents grandfather, Prescott Bush, and several accomplices desecrated the grave of Apache holy man Geronimo at Ft. Sill, Okla. The men removed Geronimos head and a prized silver bridle which had been buried with him. Using acid and amid laughter, they stripped Geronimos head of hair and flesh. They then took their trophies back to Yale University and put them on display in the clubhouse of the secret fraternity Skull & Bones.

The Skull & Bones is a secret society founded at Yale in 1832. Its history is intertwined with that of the German Illuminati and the Nazi Party. They maintain a windowless building called The Tomb at 64 High Street, New Haven, Conn. The clubs assets are controlled by a front company, The Russell Trust Association, Inc. Every year, 15 Yale juniors are tapped for Skull & Bones membership. They are indoctrinated into the cultish society with elaborate rituals steeped in satanic theatricism and latent homosexuality. The goal of this fraternity is to create the ultimate network of good ol boys around the world. Their alumni includes Prescott Bushs son (George H. W.) and grandson (George W.) as well as heads of state and leaders of numerous intelligence agencies, trading companies, business empires and law firms.

Several years ago, a Skull & Bones member anonymously leaked information regarding the society"

LAPWAI, Idaho - The Nez Perce Tribe recently received the remains of three warriors killed during the Nez Perce War of 1877 that had been held at the Smithsonian Institution for many years. One was buried at the Bears Paw Battlefield in Montana in October during the annual memorial to that battle. The other two were buried at Lapwai on Dec. 23 and 24.

Tribal Executive Committee Chairman Rebecca Miles said it had been about 10 years since the tribe was notified of the remains of the three men, one of whom was killed at the Bear Paw Battlefield, another at the Battle of the Big Hole and a third at Fort Lapwai.

Nez Perce members live on both the Colville and Umatilla Confederated reservations in addition to the Nez Perce Reservation in Idaho, and disputes between the groups delayed the return of the remains to the tribe. The Smithsonian wouldn't make a resolution on where the remains were to go until tribal members themselves agreed.

Shortly after Miles' election last May, discussions again commenced. ''The push from the executive committee was to speak to the other leaders at the highest level and resolve those disputes in the best interest of the remains. For me personally, it was to build bridges with those descendants at the other reservations - to begin working together,'' she said.

Miles, Charley Moses of the Colville reservation and Armand Minthorn of the Umatilla reservation eventually reached an agreement so the remains of one warrior could be returned in time for the annual Bears Paw Memorial and, later, to bury the other two at Lapwai. ''In my mind and in my heart, that was the"

A dispute over mining policy on the Colville Indian Reservation will affect the entire region and everyone who lives in it. And yet, with a March vote on a proposed molybdenum mining operation at Mt. Tolman fast approaching, little information is forthcoming from those who favor the development.
Worse, tribal government leaders may be falling into an all-too-common trap: the belief that to control information is to control a situation.
The Star has been made aware that a memorandum has been issued to tribal employees threatening their jobs if they talk to the press. If that's true, tribal leaders may not realize the damage they've done, the confirmation they have provided to those who might suspect the proposal could not withstand the light of day."

Subject: Update on Brent

Date: Fri, 10 Feb 2006 12:19:59 EST

Hi Guys!

I received the following update on Brent:"

"Hope all is well with each of you. It has been almost two weeks since I sent an update about Brent and family. I was out of town from Jan. 28-Feb. 6 and have just now caught up from being gone so long. Since I last wrote, they have been successful in working Brent off of the ventilator. He is breathing on his own and seems to be doing well with that."

"They have also incorporated physical therapy (PT) and occupational therapy (OT) into his routine. Robyn has tried to establish some sort of routine in her life, but has not really been able to do so yet. There is a one mile walking path around the hospital, and on pretty days she tries hard to get a little exercise. Ryan was going to come home last weekend, but his car broke down just outside of Boston and he had to abandon the idea. It just seems like when it rains, it pours!"

"I know many of you have been so generous with your offers of food. Since it is only Robyn right now, Nina and Robyn have decided to cut the meals down to only once per week. Nina is trying to use all the different groups that have asked to provide food - community organizations, church, neighbors and friends. Both Robyn and Nina have asked me to pass along to you that the meals ARE VERY APPRECIATED. Robyn has said many times how nice it is to come home after a long day and find a home cooked meal in the cooler."

"Robyn also asked me to pass along to you that she is trying to write thank you notes to everyone, and if you have not been personally thanked, she's sorry and hopes to get to it soon. I told her that the thank you notes were the least of her obligations, but she wants to try to thank everyone! Some of you who have volunteered to cook have not been called yet, but Nina says rest assured that you will be called, she has not used anyone twice, there are
just so many people that love them. What a wonderful place we live in!"

"Thanks to each of you for your love, concern and most of all prayers."

New analysis shows three human migrations out of Africa

New analysis shows three human migrations out of Africa: "New analysis shows three human migrations out of Africa Replacement theory 'demolished'

A new, more robust analysis of recently derived human gene trees by Alan R. Templeton, Ph.D, of Washington University in St Louis, shows three distinct major waves of human migration out of Africa instead of just two, and statistically refutes strongly the 'Out of Africa' replacement theory.

That theory holds that populations of Homo sapiens left Africa 100,000 years ago and wiped out existing populations of humans. Templeton has shown that the African populations interbred with the Eurasian populations thus, making love, not war.
'The 'Out of Africa' replacement theory has always been a big controversy,,' Templeton said. 'I set up a null hypothesis and the program rejected that hypothesis using the new data with a probability level of 10 to the minus 17th. In science, you don't get any more conclusive than that. It says that the hypothesis of no interbreeding is so grossly incompatible with the data, that you can reject it.'
Templeton's analysis is considered to be the only definitive statistical test to refute the theory, dominant in human evolution science for more than two decades.

'Not only does the new analysis reject the theory, it demolishes it,' Templeton said.
Templeton published his results in the Yearbook of Physical Anthropology, 2005.

He used a computer program called GEODIS, which he created in 1995 and later modified with the help of David Posada, Ph.D., and Keith Crandall, Ph.D. at Brigham Young University, to determine genetic relationships among and within populations based on an examination of specific haplotypes, clusters of genes that are inherited as a unit. Hi, Sonia,

We were quite interested in your post on the Waldens/Chavis/Goins families. We were not aware that the Waldens of Moore County, NCwere originally Chavises. We have several pages in the Moore County section of the Foundation manuscript that deal with the Goins, but nothing that dealt with the Waldens. Will you please give us the benefit of what you learn about the Goins-Waldens relationships.

The Search Engine on our Website turned 27 files that deal with the Chavis family. Most of these references were written by Charles James McDonald Furman, a newspaperman of South Carolina. Around 1890-1905 he enterviewed various members of the Chavis Settlement in Williamsburg County, SC. Evelyn McKinley Orr, First Union speaker, has researched his interviews which were published in SC newspapers around the turn of the century.

The patriarch was John Chavis, a Revolutionary soldier from Roanoke Count who moved to SC. Later, some of his descendants by the name of Smiling [known as the Smiling Indians] removed to Robeson County, NC. There they were involved in the Pembroke School lawsuit which became an early landmark case on segregation. You might find it helpful to your search to read Fu"

CNN.com - Tributes continue for Coretta Scott King - Feb 5, 2006: "'Praise God for Coretta Scott King; let the heavens rejoice for the witness of our sister,' the Rev. Raphael Warnock said after a rendition of 'Lift Every Voice and Sing' stirred the Atlanta, Georgia, congregation.
Later, in the church's Heritage Sanctuary, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference/WOMEN also honored the widow of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. for her quiet and courageous strength as a leader, wife and mother.
Atlanta's Mayor Shirley Franklin thanked King and others who worked 'so that someone who was African-American and female could lead this great city.'

In Detroit, Michigan, the Rev. Al Sharpton remembered King at the Historic Little Rock Baptist Church's Sunday service.
'Mrs. King is not history because she is dignified,' Sharpton said. 'Yes, she was dignified. Yes, she had grace. Yes, she was regal, but that doesn't make her history. She is history because her husband and her stood up for what was right.'
On Monday, King's body will lie in honor in Ebenezer's Heritage Sanctuary in the historically black Atlanta neighborhood where her late husband was born.

Across the street in the church's Horizon Sanctuary, Sharpton and several other civil rights leaders, including the Rev. Jesse Jackson, U.S. Rep. John Lewis, fomer Ambassador Andrew Young and the Rev. Joseph Lowery, will attend a service remembering King Monday night.

'It's the least we can do for the many sacrifices she made,' Warnock said. 'It is fitting for us to honor her. We join with people all over the world in celebration of her life.'
King's funeral will be held at New Birth Missionary Baptist Church in Lithonia, where the Kings' youngest child, Bernice, is a minister."

Researchers say they have used an underwater robot to map the remains of a sunken ancient Greek merchant ship off the Greek coast.

Fish swim by and a sponge grows among amphora from a 4th century B.C. Greek merchant ship found in 200 feet of water off Chios in the Aegean Sea and photographed by SeaBED. (Chios 2005 Shipwreck Survey: Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution; Hellenic Ministry of Culture, Ephorate of Underwater Antiquities; and Hellenic Center for Marine Research)

The team accomplished in two days what it would take divers years to do in studying the 4th-Century B.C. ship and its cargo, researchers said.

Our technologies allows us to learn about the past in ways that we couldnt achieve otherwise, said Brendan Foley, an archaeologist with the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Woods Hole, Mass. and a member of the team.
The technology, he added, will let many researchers stop looking for mere footnotes in history and focus on bigger things. Were looking to write new chapters, and are convinced that in 10 to 15 years using these methods, we will have changed history.

The project is the first in a new collaboration between U.S. and Greek researchers, who discovered the wreck in 2004 during a sonar survey.
The wooden ship sank off Chios and Oinoussia islands in the eastern Aegean Sea in 60 meters (about 200 feet) of water, too deep for conventional SCUBA diving. Its most visible remains are a cargo of 400 ceramic jars, called amphoras, filled with wine and olive oil.

The researchers said they made a precise survey of the site using the robotic vehicle, ca"

JFAR: "Review by Trisha

February 25th, 2005

On February 25th, 2005, I had the fortunate opportunity to attend the premiere viewing of 'Justice For All' held at Regent University in Virginia Beach. Created under the label of Strong Tower Productions and directed by Roger Spendlove, the film is an independent student work done in the Western genre that stars noted actors such as DJ Perry and Terry Jernigan -- two of our favorites.

The scope of the film deals with our hero, the 'Oklahoma Kid' (DJ Perry), who seeks justice for the death of a friend. Once justice is rendered, he tries to bring peace and opportunity for a brighter future to a small backwoods shantytown he aspires to call 'a paradise'. Or is it? The people of this small desolate town feel that peace and prosperity, once they've had a taste of it, maybe isn't what they really want after all.

The first interview of the evening was with Austin TwoFeatherz. A relative newcomer to film, TwoFeatherz is a man whose presence, both on film and in person, is striking. When TwoFeatherz enters a room, you know it. He has a presence about him that makes you take notice. A member of the Notoweega Nation, he stands proud of his Indian heritage, and rightfully so. Extremely talented, his protrayal of the one willing to take a stand beside the 'Oklahoma Kid' in the film's ending is one that you wish there was more of. With inevitable trouble lurking, he silently takes a stand as the Kid's ally, and it is his added presence in this well-written story that helps to heighten the film's breath-holding, cliff-hanging ending. I have no doubt that, if film is an avenue this actor desires to pursue, we will surely see more of him in the future. I was impressed with Austin TwoFeatherz, not just as an actor but also as a person. He was genuine, he was h"

Blue Ridge Country...Mountain Curious in Gatlinburg, TN and West Virginia

Blue Ridge Country...Mountain Curious in Gatlinburg, TN and West Virginia: "If you stroll along Main Street in the Charleston, W.Va. suburb of Hurricane, youll spot several historic items a Victorian gazebo, a restored CSX caboose, and a large chunk of rock with a primitive drawing of what looks like an indignant woman carved into its surface.

The rock, West Virginias most controversial petroglyph, is known as Maiden of the Rock, Water Monsters Daughter or Prom Queen, depending upon whos talking. The 77-inch sandstone carving represents a woman standing with her arms akimbo and her hair sticking straight out all over her head. She looks pretty scary, frankly.

The state historical society believes she is authentic, at least partially authentic. "

Native American

Trisha: Give me some background here, what your relationship is--how you first met Mr.Perry.

TwoFeatherz: I ran into DJ on set. They asked me to come out here and play a Native American in this movie, JUSTICE FOR ALL. I ran into Mr.Perry then. He's a great guy. We got along really well right off the bat.

Trisha: Really...?

TwoFeatherz: Yeah. And he shares a few other interests, like I do. I taught him how to throw a tomahawk and a knife.

Trisha: That's what I was going to ask you about.

TwoFeatherz: Yeah, he was a natural. I also taught Colin Ferell how to throw the tomahawk and knife.

Trisha: Really...?

TwoFeatherz: Um-hum. DJ and Colin and I are going to get together some day and have a good night/weekend.

Trisha: Well, invite me when you do that.

TwoFeatherz: Well, that 's up to Mr.Ferell.

Trisha: Okay, going back to this tomahawk, you obviously grew up learning this and...

TwoFeatherz: Well, I'm Native American and I'm also part Irish.

Trisha: Where are you from?

TwoFeatherz: I was born here, but my people come from mid-west, Ohio. My father and mother are both half, so that makes me about half. I'm Notoweega.

Trisha: My family originated from Ohio.

TwoFeatherz: Oh, okay. Just outside Cincinnati a ways. And I'm also a card-carrying native. (He had me a card) The back part is the best part.

Trisha: (reading from the card) 'The bearer of this card is entitled by birth to all the culture history, language and tradition of the indigenous people known as the Notoweega Nation and is hereto a recognized member subject to its jurisdiction of"

W.Va. Gov. Seeks Halt in Coal Production - Yahoo! News

W.Va. Gov. Seeks Halt in Coal Production - Yahoo! News: "CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Gov. Joe Manchin called for all coal companies in West Virginia to shut down for safety checks after two more mine workers were killed Wednesday in separate accidents.

While Manchin's call was voluntary, an industry group that represents most of the state's coal producers said its members would comply. The governor also ordered mine inspections speeded up so that all 544 of the state's surface and underground mines are examined by regulators as soon as possible.
'We're going to check for unsafe conditions, and we're going to correct any unsafe conditions before we mine another lump of coal,' Manchin said.

David Dye, acting U.S. assistant secretary of labor for mine safety and health, later urged coal mines nationwide to conduct safety and training sessions on Monday for workers at the beginning of each shift. He cited the recent upsurge in mine accidents.

'I am asking miners and management at every mine operation to do the right thing: take one hour out for safety's sake this Monday,' Dye said in a statement.

Both deaths Wednesday occurred at mines in southwestern West Virginia, officials said. One miner was killed at an underground mine when a wall support popped loose. And a bulldozer operator died at a surface mine when the vehicle struck a gas line and sparked a fire.

The deaths brought to 16 the number of mining-related fatalities in West Virginia since Jan. 2. Two other coal miners one each in Kentucky and Utah have also died in accidents this year.

Manchin said the safety checks would include reviewing mine conditions, safety checklists and designated escape routes.
The West Virginia Coal Association, whose members account for 80 percent of the state's coal production, said its member"

DNA Testing: In Our Blood - Newsweek Technology - MSNBC.com

DNA Testing: In Our Blood - Newsweek Technology - MSNBC.com: "Our blood holds the secrets to who we are, and, increasingly, individuals, families and research scientists are using genetic testing to tell us what we don't already know. Human genomes are 99.9 percent identical; we are far more similar than diverse. But that tiny 0.1 percent difference holds clues to our ancestries, the roots of all human migration and even our propensity for disease. Tens of thousands of Americans have swabbed their cheeks and mailed in their DNA to companies nationwide for testing. Far-flung cousins are finding each other; family legends are being overturned. Six years ago the term genetic genealogy was meaningless, says Bennett Greenspan, head of Family Tree DNA, which has 52,000 customers. 'Now the interest is huge.' So huge that celebrities like Whoopi Goldberg and Quincy Jones are signing on. This week Gates and other high-profile black Americans will tell their stories on PBS's new series 'African American Lives.'

As individuals track down their personal family narratives, population geneticists are seeking to tell the larger story of humankind. Our most recent common ancestorsa genetic 'Adam' and 'Eve'have been traced back to Africa, and other intriguing forebears are being discovered all over the map. Last month one group of scientists found that 40 percent of the world's Ashkenazi Jews descend from just four women; another reported that one in five males in northwest Ireland may be a descendant of a legendary fifth-century warlord. The most ambitious effort by far is the National Geographic Society's $40 million Genographic Project, which aims to collect 100,000 DNA samples from indigenous populations around the world over the next five years. The goal: to trace human roots from the present day back to the origin of
