the oldest known European settlement in the interior of the United States, north of Morgantown, NC.

Smithsonian Magazine has an interesting article on this archaeological site in the March issue titled 'Spain Makes a Stand'. The dig is on land owned by a Berry family. There is evidence of a Spanish Fort that abuts an Indian mound. States they have found numerous European artifacts.
