Blue Ridge Country...Mountain Curious in Gatlinburg, TN and West Virginia: "If you stroll along Main Street in the Charleston, W.Va. suburb of Hurricane, youll spot several historic items a Victorian gazebo, a restored CSX caboose, and a large chunk of rock with a primitive drawing of what looks like an indignant woman carved into its surface.
The rock, West Virginias most controversial petroglyph, is known as Maiden of the Rock, Water Monsters Daughter or Prom Queen, depending upon whos talking. The 77-inch sandstone carving represents a woman standing with her arms akimbo and her hair sticking straight out all over her head. She looks pretty scary, frankly.
The state historical society believes she is authentic, at least partially authentic. "
