A dispute over mining policy on the Colville Indian Reservation will affect the entire region and everyone who lives in it. And yet, with a March vote on a proposed molybdenum mining operation at Mt. Tolman fast approaching, little information is forthcoming from those who favor the development.
Worse, tribal government leaders may be falling into an all-too-common trap: the belief that to control information is to control a situation.
The Star has been made aware that a memorandum has been issued to tribal employees threatening their jobs if they talk to the press. If that's true, tribal leaders may not realize the damage they've done, the confirmation they have provided to those who might suspect the proposal could not withstand the light of day."
