"Berry's fifteen plus years of study of what he termed, the 'Mestizos or racial orphans' along the southeastern coast, was extensive for his time. It resulted in a depth of understanding achieved by few others. After summarizing a few of the established speculated name origins, he stated, "truth is, no one has the faintest idea where the name Melungeon came from."
