Suriname

This country has a very rich culture. Some of the people are descendants of "Maroons," who were Africans who were brought to the country in the 17th and 18th centuries as slaves and escaped to the interior. East Indians and Creoles are also in the mixture.

Suriname Information and History

"Along the north coast of South America, Suriname is a small, but ethnically diverse, country. Most people are descendants of African slaves and Indian or Indonesian servants brought over by the Dutch to work in agriculture. Suriname, formerly known as Dutch Guiana, gained independence in 1975. Most Surinamers live in the narrow, northern coastal plain."
