Core Melungeon DNA Project

Core Melungeon DNA Project: "Core Melungeon DNA Project:

Note Y chromosomal DNA results so far show European (R1b) and African (E3a) haplogroups.

R1b is the most common haplogroup found in Western Europeans and white Americans.

E3a is the most common haplogroup found among African Americans and West African Bantu-speaking populations.

In other words, the DNA results match the census, tax, and other records of the 18th and 19th centuries, which describe Melungeon ancestors as 'mulatto' and 'free colored'."
